Hear Beyonce’s Resilient New Song ‘Spirit’ - Rolling Stone Posted: 09 Jul 2019 09:17 PM PDT Beyoncé has unveiled new song "Spirit," which will appear on her forthcoming album, The Lion King: the Gift, as well as on the soundtrack and in the film for the live-action remake of The Lion King. "Spirit" opens with resonant voices trading call and responses. Over rich piano, orchestral melodies and choir-tipped choruses, Beyoncé sings her uplifting verses about resilience. "Rise up to the light in the sky, yeah," she sings. "Watch the light lift your heart up/Burn your flame through the night." For the Beyoncé-executive produced and curated The Gift, the singer said the album features some of her favorite artists. "This is sonic cinema," Beyoncé said in a statement. "This is a new experience of storytelling. I wanted to do more than find a collection of songs that were inspired by the film. It is a mixture of genres and collaboration that isn't one sound. It is influenced by everything from R&B, hip-hop and Afro Beat." "I wanted to put everyone on their own journey to link the storyline," she continued. "Each song was written to reflect the film's storytelling that gives the listener a chance to imagine their own imagery, while listening to a new contemporary interpretation. It was important that the music was not only performed by the most interesting and talented artists but also produced by the best African producers. Authenticity and heart were important to me." Beyoncé voices lioness Nala and Donald Glover portrays the older Simba in the remake of the 1994 Disney animated film. The pair also teamed for a rendition of Elton John/Tim Rice's "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," which appears on the film's soundtrack. The Lion King: the Gift will be released on July 19th, while The Lion King original motion picture soundtrack arrives on July 11th. The Lion King hits theaters on July 19th. |
Posted: 14 Jul 2019 02:17 PM PDT In snapshots that nearly broke Instagram, Beyoncé and the Duchess of Sussex have finally met. Joined by the Duke of Sussex, Duchess Meghan walked the yellow carpet at the European premiere of The Lion King at Leicester Square. The royals attended in support of Protect The Pride charity, which works to protect the dwindling lion population in Africa. And cameras were on-hand to capture the moment that Markle, 37, met the singer, 37, who voices Nala in the CGI remake. They then continued to talk closely as Beyoncé's husband Jay-Z looked on, smiling. At another point, Beyoncé, who looked beautiful in a golden dress, told Markle "we love you guys" and "your baby is so beautiful"—referencing 2-month-old Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, who was born on May 6. Prince Harry then joined the trio and exchanged pleasantries. In one clip, the rapper, 49, is heard giving some parenting advice to Harry, 34, advising the new dad to "always find time for yourself." After that star-filled encounter, the Sussexes went on to talk with Pharrell, who produces five songs on the Lion King's 2019 soundtrack, and Seth Rogen, who voices Pumbaa. They pair was also photographed with Elton John, who was close to Princess Diana and also sang at the Sussexes' afternoon wedding reception in 2018. Related: Aww! The Duchess of Sussex and the Duchess of Cambridge Step out With Their Children to Cheer on Prince William and Harry at Polo Match Beyonce and Jay-Z famously showed their support for the Duchess back in February. Sharing a video in which they recorded their BRIT Awards acceptance speech, the couple stood in front of a framed portrait of the Duchess wearing a crown. "In honor of Black History Month, we bow down to one of our Melanated Monas," Beyoncé wrote on her Instagram, paying tribute to Markle's biracial heritage. "Congrats on your pregnancy! We wish you so much joy." In May, Markle's makeup artist Daniel Martin revealed that the royal was surprised by the iconic moment: "Oh my God, I sent her a screengrab of the two of them in front of the portrait, and I think all I wrote was, 'Girl!' Like hello!' And she wrote me back, like the big eye emoji," Martin recalled. Just a day earlier, the Duchess was there to cheer on her friend Serena Williams during her Wimbledon match. She sat alongside her sister-in-law, the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton and Middleton's sister, Pippa Middleton. A busy, but fun weekend for the Duchess, indeed! |
Posted: 09 Jul 2019 08:47 PM PDT "The Lion King" redux is coming, with a new song by Beyonce. Well, they needed a new song to qualify for the Oscars since the Elton John songs are 25 years old. Can you feel the gold statue tonight? It's the circle of life, after all. Beyonce's song is called "Spirit." It's written by Lebo M. and Hans Zimmer with Beyonce adding her own special touch. She is royalty and this is about royalties. 'Natch. |
Posted: 25 Jun 2019 12:00 AM PDT A cover of "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" isn't the only new Beyoncé music we'll get from the live action Lion King. Today, Disney released the full soundtrack track list with one song left untitled as "TBA." In a new interview with Fandango, Lion King director Jon Favreau revealed that space is being held for a new song written and performed by Beyoncé. In the interview, Favreau said Beyoncé created the song "in the spirit of the production" with composers Lebo M and Hans Zimmer. "They were all collaborating with her and helping to bring this new piece of music into a film where there's already a very established musical personality to the piece," he said. "So it was nice of them to have them working with her to allow the new song to feel organically a part of the new production." Favreau added that Nala has a much larger role in the remake than in the original. "In the original film, her role is not as large as in the stage production, and we definitely drew inspiration, and that was one of the areas where we were going to expand this," he continued elsewhere in the interview. "There's an opportunity to build upon especially the female characters of Sarabi played by Alfre Woodard and Nala played by Beyoncé that the stage play explores further. It has a lot more time to do so than the original film." The new Lion King soundtrack clocks in at 19 songs, featuring "Can You Feel the Love" with Beyonce and Donald Glover, "Hakuna Matata" performed by Seth Rogan, Glover, JD McCrary (Young Simba), and Billy Eichner (Timon), a new song titled "Never Too Late" sung by Elton John, and more. |
